Nelson Mandela RIP

Lovely reflection of Mitre Peak on Milford Sound in Fiordland, New Zealand.

I'm at the computer working away in the middle of the night and, as sometimes happens, my mind wanders to events, adventures and to people I've either met or have influenced me in the past. Nelson Mandela or Madiba, the name by which he is most commonly referred to in South Africa, is one such person.

Nelson Mandela | A Leader All Others Should Try To Emulate

A legend was born under African sky
A tribal child whose dream did not die

Though years of suffering and oppression did follow
Through forgiveness and inclusion he taught us to follow

Proud in bearing and gentle of heart
The lion of South Africa who gave peace a start

I remember him well and pray that I might
Follow my own path by the grace of his light

Who Are Your Heroes?

Great leaders are everywhere. They may not get the media attention their efforts deserve, but they continue to go about doing their work and, thereby, making a real difference to the life of others and the health and peace of our world on a daily basis.

While we remember the sacrifices and achievements of greats such as Nelson Mandela, let us also be aware of the hard work and commitment by so many unsung heroes in our own town or city.

My own hero's are, more often than not, ordinary folk who, by focusing on the needs of others, are living an extraordinary, meaning rich and purpose driven life.

And there's something to be said for getting on with what you do quietly.
